Ebony G. Patterson Jamaican , b. 1981
"The beauty of Patterson’s recent work lies in her ability to depict personhoods as complex and expansive ecosystems...Lived experience bursts at the tattered seams of her tapestry and paper collage reliefs."
- Alexandra Drexelius
Ebony G. Patterson is a visual artist and educator. Patterson's multilayered practice in painting, sculpture, installation, performance and video uses beauty as a tool to address global, social and political injustices. While the bright, effusive visual cues on the surface of her works suggest vivifying celebration, signifiers point to the opposite. Ghostly forms hover amidst a tangle of flora and fauna, plants which themselves might harbor a secret poison. Patterson’s gardens are never far from notions of violence, of memorial, of blood and tears.
Patterson was recently awarded the 2023 Driskell Prize, in recognition of her contributions to the field of African American Art. Solo and group exhibitions include Hales Gallery, London, UK; The Studio Museum in Harlem, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; The Brooklyn Museum, NY; Museum of the African Diaspora, San Francisco, CA; HetHem Museum, Amsterdam, NE.
