Herbert Creecy (b.1939 - d.2003), was an exceptionally talented and successful abstract expressionist artist of Georgia. Born in Norfolk, Creecy returned to Atlanta, and enrolled in the Atlanta School of art, graduating in 1964. Atlanta School of Art faculty chose Creecy as the recipient of an annual fellowship from the French government to study abroad. Creecy studied with Stanley William Hayter founder of Atelier 17 studio established in Montparnasse in 1927.
In 2003 The Museum of Contemporary Art Georgia put together the posthumous exhibition CREECY: A Survey of Major Paintings. The exhibition was comprised of twenty two paintings from the museums collection and friends and patrons private collections and was supplemented with a color catalogue with an introduction by Annette Cone-Skeleton and two essays by scholars Dan Talley and Beth Gardiner Lytle.
In 2004 The Museum of Contemporary Art Georgia produced the film Creecy. Produced by life long friend Alan Steckerwith support from the Judith Rothschild Foundation. The 26 minute film Creecy tells Herbert Creecy's story as he would have wanted it to be told.
